George Herbert

George Herbert's *The Temple* is not the work of a man at peace with God. It is the record of a brilliant mind wrestling with devotion, doubt, and desire, written in forms so perfect they seem to breathe. Published in 1633, the year of Herbert's death, this collection contains the entire surviving body of his English verse: poems that move from rapturous praise to raw anguish, from the quiet surrender of 'The Pulley' to the rebellious fury of 'The Collar', where the speaker breaks free from God's service only to hear divine grace answer with unbearable tenderness. Herbert was trained in oratory and philosophy at Cambridge, later became a country parson in rural Wales, and brought both his intellectual precision and his yearning to these pages. The metaphysical wit is here the tool of faith, not its enemy: every conceit and clever turn serves the attempt to say what cannot be said. This is religious poetry that refuses comfort, that finds God precisely in the struggle. It influenced Crashaw, Milton, and generations of poets who understood that true devotion is not serene but fought for.
