The History of Don Quixote, Volume 1, Part 15
1605
Translated by John Ormsby
Part 15 finds Don Quixote and Sancho Panza seeking shelter at an inn, which the knight insists is a enchanted castle. Here Cervantes weaves together multiple narratives: the captive captain recounts his years of bondage to his long-lost brother, while a traveling judge arrives with his beautiful daughter, setting the stage for romantic subplots. Don Quixote, ever the deluded hero, misinterprets every interaction around him, mistaking the innkeeper's homely daughter for a princess and launching into grandiose speeches about chivalric honor. Sancho, earthier and more pragmatic, offers a running commentary on his master's madness while secretly hoping for the adventure's promised rewards. The comedy intensifies as Don Quixote's romantic delusions collide with the inn's cramped realities, yet beneath the humor lies something quieter and more poignant: the ache of separated brothers reunited, the weight of promises made and kept, the strange dignity of a man who cannot see the world as it truly is. This is Don Quixote at its most vibrant, where every scene contains multitudes.
