Sir John Oldcastle

Sir John Oldcastle dramatizes the true story of a 14th-century knight torn between his king and his conscience. A Lollard sympathizer accused of heresy, Oldcastle faces a terrible choice: renounce his beliefs or burn. The play erupts from a brawl between Catholic and reformist lords, their quarrels over Wycliffe's doctrines spiraling into violence that threatens to drag England into civil war. As judges scramble to restore order, Oldcastle stands alone, a loyal subject deemed a traitor simply for reading forbidden scripture. Written around 1600, this provocative history play proved so controversial that it was suppressed within a decade, its author deliberately obscured. The authorities weren't afraid of the drama's politics. They were afraid of making a martyr of a man the crown had already executed. For readers who think they know Shakespeare, this forgotten play offers something rare: a window into an era when faith could get you killed, and the state decided what God you were allowed to worship.
