Much Ado About Nothing

Beatrice and Benedick are the wittiest enemies in English literature. They trade insults like other couples exchange kisses, each claiming to despise love and marriage while everyone around them sees what they cannot. When meddling friends stage an elaborate deception to make them overhear fabricated admissions of secret passion, these two proud souls must swallow their words and admit they've been lying to themselves all along. Meanwhile, the straightforward young lovers Claudio and Hero face a darker threat: the scheming Don John, whose malicious lie threatens to destroy Hero's honor and Claudio's faith in a single devastating moment. Shakespeare weaves these two stories together into a comedy that is also surprisingly sharp about reputation, gender, and how quickly love can curdle into cruelty. Written around 1598, Much Ado About Nothing crackles with the pleasure of intelligent people enjoying their own cleverness. It endures because beneath the brilliant wordplay lies something true about how we deceive ourselves, how pride becomes its own punishment, and how the people we resist loving are often exactly the ones we need.
