Maaß Für Maaß: Wie Einer Mißt, so Wird Ihm Wieder Gemessen

William Shakespeare

1564

Classics of Literature, Plays/Films/Dramas

Translated by Christoph Martin Wieland

When the Duke of Vienna abdicates his throne temporarily, he leaves the puritanical Angelo in charge with orders to clean up the city's moral decay. Angelo's first act is to condemn Claudio to death for impregnating his fiance before marriage a crime that seems barely worthy of notice until now. Claudio's sister Isabella, a novice on the verge of taking religious vows, becomes his only hope. But Angelo, struck by her virtue, offers a monstrous bargain: her brother's life in exchange for her chastity. The Duke, secretly observing in disguise, manipulates events from the shadows, orchestrating a resolution that raises as many questions as it answers. This is Shakespeare at his most uncomfortable, a play that asks whether justice and mercy are truly compatible, and whether the powerful can ever be held to the standards they impose on others.
