Mikhail Aleksandrovich Bakunin

Mikhail Aleksandrovich Bakunin was a pivotal Russian revolutionary anarchist whose ideas significantly shaped the landscape of anarchism and socialist thought in the 19th century. Born into a noble family in Tver Governorate, Bakunin initially pursued an academic career but was drawn into radical politics after studying in Moscow and Berlin. His encounters with influential thinkers like Karl Marx and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon catalyzed his transformation into a leading figure of revolutionary socialism. Bakunin's activism led to multiple imprisonments and exiles, including a notable period in Siberia from which he famously escaped to Japan and then to the United States, before settling in London where he contributed to the journal Kolokol (The Bell) alongside Alexander Herzen. In 1868, Bakunin joined the International Workingmen's Association, where he championed the anarchist perspective against Marx's vision of a state-led socialism. His ideological battles culminated at the 1872 Hague Congress, where he was expelled for allegedly fostering a secret organization within the International. Despite these challenges, Bakunin continued to write influential works such as Statism and Anarchy and God and the State, advocating for a society based on self-governing federations rather than centralized authority.
