Francisco Palau y Quer was a Catalan Discalced Carmelite priest known for his profound spiritual contributions and dedication to catechetical education. Born amidst the turmoil of the Peninsular War, he embraced a life that combined hermitage with missionary work, focusing on the rural communities of Catalonia. His establishment of the School of Virtue in Barcelona served as a pioneering model for adult catechetical teaching, emphasizing the importance of spiritual formation rooted in love rather than rationalist theology. In 1860, Palau founded a Carmelite Third Order congregation in the Balearic Islands, which has since evolved into two religious congregations for women that continue to serve globally. His teachings and spiritual practices were deeply influenced by Carmelite spirituality, advocating for a personal relationship with God. Palau's legacy endures through the work of his spiritual followers, including his great-niece, Teresa of Jesus Jornet, who founded a congregation dedicated to the care of the elderly poor. Beatified in 1988, Palau's life and work remain significant in the context of Catholic spirituality and education.
