The Comedy of Errors: The Works of William Shakespeare [cambridge Edition] [9 Vols.]

William Shakespeare

1623

British Literature, Classics of Literature, Humour, Plays/Films/Dramas

Shakespeare's shortest and most anarchic comedy is a masterpiece of controlled chaos. Written in his twenties, it deploys two sets of identical twins separated at birth, then reunites them in the ancient Greek city of Ephesus with catastrophic results. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio arrive unaware that their twin brothers, complete with identically named servants, already live there. What follows is a cascade of wrong doors, wrongful beatings, false accusations of infidelity and theft, a near-seduction, an arrest, and one of the most brilliantly botched dinners in theatrical history. The humor runs from slapstick to sophisticated wordplay, but the real engine is something deeper: the terror and wonder of confronting your double, of wondering which self is the real one. Almost four centuries later, the phrase 'comedy of errors' has entered the language as shorthand for spectacular, spiraling disaster. This Cambridge edition provides the scholarly bedrock for understanding how Shakespeare turned a Roman source into English farce that still cracks audiences up.
