Septimius Felton is Hawthorne's strange, unfinished meditation on mortality, set in Revolutionary-era Concord. The young Septimius is a brooding philosopher haunted by thoughts of death, and when he kills a British officer during the tensions leading to war, he begins a desperate pursuit of the elixir of life to escape both his guilt and his mortality. Against the backdrop of colonial unrest, Hawthorne weaves a haunting narrative about what drives a man to refuse the fundamental bargain of human existence. The novel pulses with dark intellectual energy, exploring the psychology of obsession, the weight of sin, and the question of whether immortality would be salvation or curse. Though fragmentary, it stands as one of Hawthorne's most personal works, written in the shadow of his own failing health and grappling with the same transcendental anxieties that consume his protagonist.
