In the shadow of a centuries-old curse, the decrepit House of the Seven Gables holds the last vestiges of the once-proud Pyncheon family. We meet Hepzibah, a formidable but impoverished spinster, reluctantly opening a penny shop in her ancestral home to support her newly released brother, Clifford, a man broken by a thirty-year wrongful imprisonment for murder. Their quiet desperation is upended by the arrival of Phoebe, a distant, sunny young relative whose vibrant spirit slowly begins to pierce the gloom. As Phoebe attempts to breathe life back into the old house and its inhabitants, a lodger named Holgrave—a daguerreotypist with a keen eye for history and a mysterious connection to the Pyncheons' past—observes their every move, uncovering the dark secrets and lingering injustices that bind the family to its fateful inheritance.
