Measure for Measure
Measure for Measure
One of Shakespeare's most uncomfortable and morally complex works, Measure for Measure presents a Vienna where a Duke mysteriously vanishes, leaving his puritanical deputy Angelo to enforce laws long ignored. Angelo's first act: condemning a young man to death for the crime of impregnating his fiancée. When the condemned man's sister Isabella, a novice nun, comes pleading for mercy, Angelo offers her an unthinkable bargain. What follows is a treacherous game of power, sexuality, and justice, as the Duke watches everything from beneath a friar's hood. This is comedy turned poisonous: the jokes land wrong, the marriages at the end feel less like salvation than settlement. Shakespeare refuses to let his audience off the hook. The Duke who saves the day is also the one whoorchestrated the crisis. Angelo is monstrous, yet his lust seems almost understandable in a world of enforced chastity. Measure for Measure asks what justice really costs, and whether mercy is ever truly given freely.
