In the Cage
1898
Henry James isolates a telegraphist in a wire cage at a London post office and watches her watch the world. This unnamed young woman spends her days decoding the cryptic telegrams of wealthy clients, piecing together their secrets from fragments of language and the elegant paper they use. She knows their comings and goings, their hidden affairs and desperate messages, yet remains invisible to them, a servant of their communications. James builds unbearable tension from this asymmetry: she sees everything, they see nothing, and her imagination transforms their mundane transactions into dramas of passion and betrayal. Her engagement to the decent but pedestrian Mr. Mudge represents a life of comfortable stasis, while Captain Everard's mysterious telegrams suggest another world entirely, one she might enter if she could only crack his code. The novella operates in the space between observation and fantasy, between what the telegraphist truly knows and what she longs to believe. James renders the prison of class with exquisite precision, showing how knowledge can both liberate and entrap.
