A Small Boy and Others
A Small Boy and Others is Henry James's luminous excavation of his own origins, a memoir composed in the autumn of his career that reads like a man sifting through the sediment of early memory to find the gold of understanding. Written in 1913, when James was seventy, it traces his consciousness back to its earliest formations: the brick sidewalks of Albany, the formidable presence of his brother William, the grandmother's house that became a kingdom of the imagination. What emerges is not simple nostalgia but something more subtle: a portrait of the artist as a young boy, watching, absorbing, learning the shapes that would later populate his revolutionary novels. The James family, with their intellectual ferocity and their transatlantic ambitions, becomes a prism through which mid-19th century American culture refracts. James writes with deliberate opacity, circling around memories rather than stating them directly, as if demonstrating that memory itself is a creative act. For readers who have been lost in the labyrinthine pleasure of James's fiction, this memoir offers the key to the maze: the sources of that unparalleled attention to the flicker and nuance of human interaction.
