Stewart Andrew McDowall was an English biologist, eugenicist, and philosopher known for his unique integration of Christian theology with evolutionary biology. Born in Bedford, he received his education at St Paul's School and University College London, ultimately graduating in natural science from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1904. His academic career began in earnest when he took on the role of Professor of Biology at the Christian College in Madras in 1905, later returning to England to serve as an assistant master and senior science master at Winchester College. McDowall was also ordained in the Church of England, serving as chaplain at Winchester, which further informed his scientific and philosophical pursuits. A theistic evolutionist, McDowall's work emphasized a non-materialistic view of evolution, positing that it was progressive and aligned with Christian cosmology. He was influenced by the ideas of Henri Bergson and sought to reconcile scientific understanding with spiritual beliefs. His notable contributions include the Hulsean Lectures on Evolution, Knowledge and Revelation, delivered in 1923-1924, which were characterized by their metaphysical idealism. McDowall's legacy lies in his efforts to bridge the gap between science and religion, making significant contributions to the discourse on evolution and its implications for Christian thought.
