Paavo Korhonen

Paavo Korhonen was a prominent Finnish Nordic skier known for his remarkable achievements in the sport during the mid-20th century. He gained recognition for winning individual titles at the prestigious Holmenkollen ski festival in 1957 and the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 1958. His competitive spirit shone through as he represented Finland in three Olympic Games—1952, 1956, and 1960—where he consistently placed among the top competitors, finishing fourth in both the 1952 and 1956 Olympics and ninth in 1960. Notably, he also competed in the 18 km cross-country skiing event at the 1952 Games, securing a commendable 14th place. Beyond his athletic prowess, Korhonen's legacy is cemented in Finnish sports history, particularly as he served as the Finnish flag bearer during the opening ceremony of the 1960 Olympics.
