Napoleone Colajanni

Napoleone Colajanni was an influential Italian writer, journalist, and politician, renowned for his contributions to socialism and criminology. Initially a republican, he shifted towards socialism in the 1880s, becoming a prominent theoretical voice in the movement and earning the title of the father of Sicilian socialism. His writings during this period addressed the social issues of his time, advocating for the rights of the working class and critiquing the socio-political landscape of Italy. However, disillusioned by the Marxist discourse of the Italian Socialist Party, he returned to his republican roots in 1894 and joined the Italian Republican Party, where he continued to make significant contributions to political thought and action. Colajanni was also a notable figure in criminology, where he emerged as a vocal critic of the Lombrosian school, which linked criminal behavior to biological determinism. His election to the national Chamber of Deputies in 1890 marked the beginning of a long political career, as he was re-elected in every subsequent parliament until his death in 1921.
