Françoise d'Aubigné, known as Madame de Maintenon, was a prominent French noblewoman who wielded significant influence during the reign of Louis XIV. Born into a struggling Huguenot family, she initially gained access to the elite circles of Paris through her marriage to the poet Paul Scarron. After becoming a widow, her fortunes changed when she became involved with Madame de Montespan, the king's mistress, who entrusted her with the care of Louis XIV's illegitimate children. Over time, Maintenon ascended to a position of power, ultimately marrying the king in a secret ceremony after the death of Queen Maria Theresa in 1683, although she was never officially recognized as queen. Madame de Maintenon's influence extended beyond the personal realm; she was a key advisor to Louis XIV and played a vital role in shaping his policies, particularly in matters of religion. Her devout Catholic faith helped steer the king towards a more pious lifestyle, marking a shift in his court's dynamics. In 1686, she founded the Maison royale de Saint-Louis, a school dedicated to the education of girls from impoverished noble families, which became a significant institution for female education in France. After Louis XIV's death in 1715, Maintenon retired to Saint-Cyr, where she continued to influence educational reform until her passing in 1719. Her legacy is marked by her unique position as a woman of power in a male-dominated society and her contributions to education and religious life in France.
