The Correspondence of Madame, Princess Palatine, Mother of the Regent; Of Marie-Adélaïde De Savoie, Duchesse De Bourgogne; And of Madame De Maintenon, in Relation to Saint-Cyr

These are the private letters of women who shaped the most powerful court in Europe. Princess Palatine, mother to the future Regent of France, writes with a German princess's directness that scandalized Versailles. Her correspondence with Madame de Maintenon (Louis XIV's secret wife) and the young Duchesse de Bourgogne crackles with resentment, wit, and political maneuvering. Here, history isn't made in councils of war but in whispered confidences, slights remembered, and alliances forged through ink. The letters reveal a world where women exercised power through correspondence alone, their influence dependent on the men who officially held the throne. Palatine's gripes about Maintenon sit alongside her longing for her native Palatinate, her observations on court life, and her sharp assessments of the people who ruled France. This is history from the inside, preserved by women who had everything to lose and wrote nonetheless.
