Joseph, Jr. Smith

Joseph, Jr. Smith

Joseph Smith, Jr. was an American religious leader and founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, which later became known as Mormonism. Born in Vermont, he grew up in a family that was deeply involved in the religious revivalism of the early 19th century. In 1820, at the age of 14, Smith claimed to have experienced a divine vision known as the First Vision, in which he was visited by God and Jesus Christ. This event marked the beginning of his prophetic mission, leading to the publication of the Book of Mormon in 1830, a foundational text for the Latter Day Saints that he claimed to have translated from golden plates revealed to him by an angel named Moroni. Smith's leadership was characterized by his charismatic personality and his ability to attract followers, leading to the establishment of several communities, including Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Illinois. His teachings emphasized the restoration of original Christianity, the importance of revelation, and the establishment of a new Zion. However, his controversial practices, including polygamy, and the growing tensions with surrounding communities led to significant conflict. Smith was ultimately killed by a mob in Carthage, Illinois, in 1844. His legacy endures through the continued growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which claims millions of members worldwide, and his writings remain central to the faith's doctrine.

“The Standard of Truth has been erected; no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing; persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done.””

“Peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes. Thy friends do stand by thee...' -Jesus the Christ””
