John Mackay Wilson was a Scottish writer best known for his influential collection, 'Wilson's Tales of The Borders (and of Scotland).' Born in Tweedmouth, he began his literary career as the editor of the Berwick Advertiser, where he published local stories that quickly gained popularity. This success prompted him to expand these tales into a weekly broadsheet, which became a significant platform for storytelling in the region. Despite his untimely death at the age of 31, Wilson's work continued to thrive, with 'Wilson's Tales' running to an impressive 312 editions and featuring a total of 485 tales and serializations, significantly impacting Scottish literature. Wilson's literary contributions extended beyond his tales; he also wrote poetry and plays, reflecting the social issues of his time. His poem 'Beans and Bacon' is often viewed as semi-autobiographical, capturing the struggles of his own life. After his passing, the Tales were continued by other editors, notably Alexander Leighton, in part to support Wilson's widow and family. Today, the Wilson's Tales Project honors his legacy with literary events, ensuring that his contributions to Scottish literature and culture are remembered and celebrated.
