Alphonse Esquiros was a prominent French writer and politician, born in Paris in 1812. He gained notoriety for his provocative work, 'L'évangile du peuple' (1840), which presented Jesus as a social reformer, challenging the religious norms of his time. This bold exposition led to his imprisonment and a fine for offending public decency. Esquiros was deeply involved in the political landscape of France, aligning himself with socialist ideals. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1850 but faced exile in 1851 due to his opposition to the Second French Empire. After returning to France in 1869, he resumed his political career, eventually becoming a senator in 1876. In addition to his political endeavors, Esquiros wrote extensively on social issues, producing works such as 'Histoire des Montagnards' (1847) and 'Paris, ou Les sciences, les institutions, et les moeurs au XIXe siècle' (1847). His five-volume series 'L'Angleterre et la vie anglaise' (1859-1869) reflects his experiences in England, with some portions translated into English, including 'Cornwall and its Coasts' (1865). Esquiros's writings not only contributed to the literary and political discourse of his time but also highlighted the struggles for social reform and liberty, leaving a lasting impact on French literature and politics until his death in 1876.
