Midsummer Night's Dream

William Shakespeare

Midsummer Night's Dream

Midsummer Night's Dream

William Shakespeare

A forest at night. Four young lovers lost and stumbling into each other's arms by accident. A fairy king who punishes his queen with magical cruelty. A donkey-headed man adored by a besotted goddess. And a mischievous sprite who admits, with a grin, that he nearly ruined everything. This is Shakespeare's most sheerly delightful comedy, a play that understands love the way a dream does: irrational, insistent, and blind to everything except its own desire. When Puck's love potion drips into the wrong eyes, the forest becomes a hall of mirrors where no one sees clearly and everyone reaches for the wrong person. Meanwhile, a troupe of amateur actors rehearses their own play in the woods, utterly unaware that real magic crackles around them. Four hundred years later, Midsummer Night's Dream still works because it knows what love actually is: a kind of madness. A foolishness. A beautiful mistake that we make over and over, and wouldn't have any other way.
