Liza of Lambeth

Somerset Maugham was twenty-one years old when he wrote this novel, and it still burns with youthful intensity. Set in the sweltering streets of Lambeth in the 1890s, it follows Liza Kemp, an eighteen-year-old factory worker who wants desperately to be more than her circumstances allow. When she catches the eye of Tom, a decent but dull suitor, and then the dangerous attention of Jim Blakeston, a married man new to the street, Liza finds herself torn between safety and passion, between what society permits and what her body demands. Maugham renders the cramped world of Vere Street with cinematic vividness: the heat, the noise, the watching neighbors, the way poverty narrows every option while desire expands beyond every boundary. This is a tragedy of a young woman who reaches for something more and finds only the consequences. It scandalized London when published in 1897, and it remains a startlingly honest portrait of working-class life and the particular cruelty of being young and wanting in a world that has already decided your place.
