Henri VIII
1623
Henri VIII is a historical tragedy by William Shakespeare, first published in 1623, exploring the tumultuous reign of King Henry VIII of England. The play delves into the lives of key figures such as Cardinal Wolsey, Queen Catherine of Aragon, and Anne Boleyn, highlighting themes of betrayal, loyalty, and the clash between personal ambition and public duty. Notably, it features more stage directions than any of Shakespeare's other works and is believed to be a collaboration with John Fletcher. The play's first performance in 1613 famously led to the destruction of the Globe Theatre due to a cannon mishap.
