Chouans (version 2)
Published in 1829, 'The Chouans' is Honoré de Balzac's first novel under his own name and the inaugural work of his series 'The Human Comedy.' Set in 1799 during the rise of Napoleon, the story depicts the conflict between the Chouans, a guerrilla militia seeking to restore the Bourbon monarchy, and the forces of the Republic. This novel is notable for its blend of historical fact and fiction, showcasing Balzac's research into the period and the lives of the Bretons, while also presenting a romance between characters from opposing sides. It is an early example of historical fiction that influenced the genre's development in the 19th century.
