Cashel Byron's Profession
1886
Cashel Byron arrives at Moncript House a problem: he's massively strong, gifted at every sport, and utterly indifferent to the academic refinements expected of a gentleman. Shaw's fourth novel follows this Australian-born rebel as he navigates, and decisively refuses, the suffocating expectations of English public school culture. When Cashel abandons the drawing room for the boxing ring, Shaw poses a question that still resonates: what happens when society demands that a young man be something other than what he actually is? The novel, based loosely on real prizefighter John L. Sullivan, crackles with early Shaw wit as it dismantles class pretension and celebrates defiant, uncouth, magnificent stubbornness. This is Shaw before he became the great playwright, but the intelligence and satirical bite are already unmistakable. It's a book about the violence we do to young people when we refuse to let them be themselves.
