Stephen Return Riggs was a dedicated Christian missionary and linguist who devoted his life to the Dakota people in the 19th century. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, he began his missionary work in 1837 at the Lac qui Parle Mission in Minnesota, where he immersed himself in the Dakota culture and language. Riggs's significant contributions include the creation of a grammar and dictionary for the Dakota language, as well as a translation of the New Testament, which showcased his commitment to both faith and linguistic preservation. He collaborated with Thomas Smith Williamson on a complete translation of the Bible, further solidifying his role as a key figure in the intersection of Christianity and Native American languages. Riggs's autobiography, "Mary and I, or Forty Years with the Sioux," provides a personal account of his experiences and challenges while living among the Dakota. His work extended beyond linguistics; during the Sioux Uprising in 1862, he served as an interpreter at the trials, highlighting his deep involvement in the socio-political issues of his time. Riggs's legacy is marked by his efforts to bridge cultural divides and his pioneering work in Dakota linguistics, which remains influential in the study of Native American languages today.
“Thus it will appear that we have placed and kept the Bible in the fore front of our work. It has been evangelization first, and civilization following along with it. This, it seems to us, is the true order. The civilization and the grand unification of the world is to be accomplished through faith in Christ. Hence it is written: ‘For it pleased God that in Him should all fullness dwell; and, having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things to Himself.””
“That uncivilized heathen nations should first be civilized, and then Christianized, is a sentiment of the past. Now it is coming more and more to be acknowledged, that the Bible is the great civilizer of the nations.””
