Josef Ohrwalder was a Roman Catholic priest and missionary from Lana in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He dedicated a significant part of his life to missionary work in Sudan, where he was ultimately captured by the Mahdists. His harrowing experience of captivity lasted for a decade, during which he endured numerous hardships. Ohrwalder's escape in 1895 was facilitated by Francis Reginald Wingate, who later translated Ohrwalder's German manuscript detailing his experiences into English. This account, titled 'Ten Years in the Sudan,' provided a rare and personal insight into the socio-political landscape of Sudan during a tumultuous period in its history. Ohrwalder's writings are notable not only for their vivid storytelling but also for their historical significance, as they document the challenges faced by missionaries in the region and the complexities of colonial encounters. His work contributed to the understanding of Sudanese culture and the impact of European missionary efforts. Despite the challenges he faced, Ohrwalder's legacy endures through his writings, which continue to shed light on the intersection of faith, culture, and colonialism in the late 19th century.
