Jasper Danckaerts was a Dutch pietist and the founder of a Labadist colony along the Bohemia River in present-day Maryland. Born in Vlissingen, he embarked on a significant journey in 1679, accompanied by fellow emissary Peter Sluyter, to establish a community for their religious sect in North America. Danckaerts meticulously documented their travels in a journal that provides one of the earliest and most detailed accounts of the region previously known as New Netherland, encompassing parts of modern-day New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. His observations of the landscape and the lifestyle of its inhabitants during the late 17th century offer invaluable insights into the early colonial experience in America. Despite their efforts, the Labadist settlement struggled to thrive, never exceeding a population of 100 individuals and ultimately dissolving by 1720. Danckaerts' journal, originally written in Dutch, was rediscovered in the 19th century and translated into English, ensuring that his observations would reach a broader audience. The work remains a significant contribution to early American history, reflecting the challenges and aspirations of a religious community seeking to establish itself in a new world. Through his writings, Danckaerts not only chronicled his journey but also captured the complexities of colonial life, making him an important figure in the narrative of early American settlement.
