Alexander McCaul was an influential Irish Hebraist and missionary known for his dedication to Jewish outreach and education. After studying Hebrew and German in Warsaw, he moved to St. Petersburg, where he gained the favor of Tsar Alexander I. Following his ordination in England, McCaul returned to Poland in 1823 to lead the mission to the Jews in Warsaw, where he served as the English chaplain until 1830, navigating complex relationships with local Lutheran congregations. His efforts in Poland laid the groundwork for his later work in England, where he became a prominent figure in Jewish missionary activities. In 1832, McCaul settled in London, where he supported the London Society for promoting Christianity among the Jews and founded the Jews' Operatives Converts Institution. He was also a prolific writer, publishing "Old Paths," a weekly pamphlet that discussed Jewish rituals and beliefs. His academic contributions were recognized when he was appointed principal of the Hebrew college by the London Society and later became a professor at King's College London. McCaul's work significantly shaped Jewish-Christian relations in the 19th century and left a lasting legacy in the field of Hebraic studies and missionary work.
