Varieties of Religious Experience

In 1901, a Harvard psychologist stood before the University of Edinburgh and asked a question that neither science nor theology had dared to pose: not whether God exists, but what happens to human beings when they encounter the divine. William James's Varieties of Religious Experience launched the modern study of religious psychology, and it remains startlingly fresh a century later. James refuses to argue for or against doctrinal truth. Instead, he catalogs the raw, intimate landscape of religious experience: mystical states, conversion, the agony of the soul seeking God, the radiant assurance of the saint. He distinguishes between the "healthy-minded" who take existence at face value and the "twice-born" who must be broken and remade by their encounters with the sacred. This is philosophy with blood in its veins, drawn from diaries, revival meetings, and the testimonies of religious revolutionaries. James concludes that the variety of religious experience itself suggests something profound about human nature. The book has no interest in proving God. It is interested in what happens to us when we believe.
