Third Person

Two elderly sisters in a London house become convinced they're haunted by a mysterious third presence. Mrs. Voss and her sibling each claim superior insight into this spectral figure, their competition intensifying with every imagined sighting. What begins as mild alarm curdles into absurd possessiveness: each woman insists HER ghost is the more authentic apparition. Written with a light, wry touch, James transforms potential supernatural dread into a delicious comedy of vanity and longing. The satire cuts both ways - at Victorian spiritualism's credulity and at the sisters' desperate need to transform their quiet, empty lives into something worth competing over. A brief, gleaming comic sketch that proves even Henry James could find humor in hauntings.
