The Secret of the Island
1875
Translated by William Henry Giles Kingston
They crash-land on a deserted island in the Pacific, and what begins as a fight for survival becomes something far stranger. Five men and a dog, hurled there by a violent storm during a balloon expedition, must learn to live off the land while uncovering the island's impossible secrets. Food and shelter are immediate concerns, but as they explore, they discover phenomena that defy explanation: caves that shouldn't exist, resources that appear when needed most, and a presence watching over them from the shadows. When a pirate ship appears on the horizon flying a black flag, the colonists face their gravest threat yet. But they are not alone. Captain Nemo, the mysterious genius from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has been sheltering them all along. Verne weaves adventure and mystery into something profound: a meditation on what humans can accomplish when ingenuity meets courage, and what mysteries the world still holds.
