The Pothunters
1902
This is Wodehouse before he became Wodehouse and yet, remarkably, you can already hear the machine gun. The Pothunters, his first published novel, introduces us to St. Austin's, a fictional British public school where boys study, box, run, and enjoy tea in their studies. When two of the school's beloved silver sports trophies vanish in a midnight burglary, the hunt is on. Our protagonist Tony Graham faces his own battle of nerves ahead of a boxing competition at Aldershot, where he must face his formidable cousin Allen, while simultaneously becoming entangled in the mystery of the stolen pots. The plot spirals into delightful chaos as students, masters, and eventually the police join the pursuit. What makes this early work fascinating is watching Wodehouse find his feet: the comic dialogue snaps, the situational absurdity builds, and there are genuine thrills in the mystery elements. It's a fascinating artifact, showing the raw materials of a comic genius just beginning to assemble his signature machinery.
