John Galsworthy

1907

British Literature, Novels

In the fading autumn light of 1891, the great omnibus of Mr. Horace Pendyce waits at Worsted Skeynes station, its coachman presiding 'like an emblem of the feudal system' over the single lantern's gleam. This is Galsworthy at his most incisive: a masterly portrait of the English gentry at their zenith, observed with surgical precision and a quiet, devastating irony. Horace Pendyce himself is a man of firm convictions about agricultural practice and communal duty, a landlord who believes his role is sacred, his estate a living organism worthy of stewardship. But as guests gather at his country house, including the magnetic Mrs. Jaspar Bellew and the Hon. Geoffrey Winlow, the certainties that govern this world begin to shimmer. George Pendyce, the heir, finds himself drawn to Mrs. Bellew's problematic charm while the elaborate social rituals unfold around him. What emerges is both comedy and tragedy: the rituals, the unspoken codes, the way love and ambition curdle beneath the surface of polite conversation. Galsworthy captures a world about to transform, dissecting the loneliness that hides inside privilege and the tiny cruelties that uphold the grand houses.

“„… pentru cei din familia Pendyce era lege să nu întrebe niciodată nimic și să nu creadă ce li se spune, ci să descopere singuri ceea ce căutau, ostenindu-se în mod inutil pentru ca apoi să se plîngă.””
