Sam in the Suburbs
1925
Fresh off the boat from America and already in hot water. That's Sam Shotter's life the moment he lands in the sleepy English suburb of Valley Fields, dispatched by his uncle to start over after getting fired in spectacular fashion. But peace was never in the cards. Soon three American criminals show up on Sam's doorstep, led by the memorably named Soapy Molloy, searching for two million dollars they buried somewhere in the neighborhood. As if that weren't enough, Sam has just discovered the girl of his dreams lives next door, and he's currently sitting on whatever fortune they're all looking for. Wodehouse deploys his signature artillery: overlapping mistaken identities, absurdly specific character names, and the gentle absurdity of Americans barging into English suburbia. The comedy moves at a clip, with Sam trying to solve the mystery, win the girl, and avoid getting tangled with criminals, all while navigating the eccentric world of Valley Fields. It's a lighter entry in the Wodehouse canon, but it has the man''s unmistakable gift for making everything feel like a perfectly constructed pratfall. If you want wit without weight, this is your book.

“He shepherded her solicitously into the grill-room and made for a table by the large window that looks out on to the court. A cloak room waiter, who had padded silently upon their trail, collected his hat and stick and withdrew with the air of a leopard that has made a good kill.””
