Romeo Und Julia

Romeo Und Julia

William Shakespeare

1597

Translated by August Wilhelm von Schlegel

Two teenagers. One night. A city consumed by hate. In Verona, where the Montague and Capulet families have traded insults and injuries for generations, Romeo crashes a Capulet masquerade ball and meets Juliet. Their eyes meet across a crowded room, and everything changes. They marry in secret, believing their love can bridge the chasm between their warring houses. It cannot. What follows is a cascade of tragedy: street brawls, mistaken messages, a desperate plan gone awry, and two young bodies found together in a tomb. The Prince of Verona, who has begged these families to end their feud, sums it up: "All are punished." Shakespeare wrote this when he was barely thirty, and he understood something essential about love: it does not calculate, it does not wait, it does not accept the boundaries that society builds. Four hundred years later, Romeo and Juliet still burns because the play asks the question we still cannot answer. Is love worth dying for?
