Oliver Twist (version 4)
Born in a workhouse and orphaned at birth, Oliver Twist dares to ask for more gruel and is promptly sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. But the boy has a fire in him that the system cannot extinguish. He escapes to London and falls into the hands of Fagin, an ancient criminal who trains children to pick pockets for his living. In the rookeries of Victorian London, Oliver stumbles into a world of violence, poverty, and moral corruption while trying to remain, against all odds, decent. He witnesses things no child should see. He makes choices no child should have to make. And he discovers that kindness and cruelty often wear the same face. Dickens wrote this novel to shock his readers into recognizing what England was doing to its poorest children. The story remains a devastating question: can innocence survive in a world designed to destroy it?
