Mudfog and Other Sketches
1838
This is Dickens before he became Dickens the novelist, and he's already brilliant at dismantling pretension. The Mudfog Papers are a viciously funny parody of the Victorian scientific establishment, imagined as proceedings from a fictional "Society for the Advancement of Everything." The professors Snore, Doze, and Wheezy deliver absurd papers on preposterous subjects, and Dickens skewers the pomposity of men who take themselves enormously seriously. The title sketches follow Nicholas Tulrumble, a coal-dealer suddenly elevated to mayor of the dreary town of Mudfog, as he bumbles through local politics with spectacular incompetence. Written as parliamentary reports, memoirs, and posthumous papers, these pieces reveal Dickens's gift for comic disguise and his sharp eye for the gap between self-image and reality. It shows the satirical tooth that would sharpen into something far deadlier.
