Hernani
Hernani is a play by Victor Hugo, first performed in 1830, that became a cornerstone of the Romantic movement in literature. Set in 16th century Spain, it tells a story of love and political intrigue, challenging the Classical norms of the time. The play's premiere was controversial, with critics hoping it would discredit Romanticism, but it instead solidified its dominance for years. Hernani also inspired Giuseppe Verdi's opera 'Ernani,' which premiered in 1844.
