Godfrey Morgan: A Californian Mystery
What begins as a jaunt around the world becomes a test of survival when young Godfrey Morgan and his deportment instructor, Professor Tartelett, are shipwrecked on a remote Pacific island. But this is no ordinary castaway story. Verne populates his island with unexpected complications: a rescued African sailor named Carefinotu, mysterious visitors who may or may not be pirates, and the constant negotiation between civilization's manners and the raw demands of wilderness survival. Meanwhile, back in San Francisco, Godfrey's wealthy uncle has purchased an island at auction, setting in motion a comedy of errors involving rival claimants and competitive schemes. The result is Verne at his most playful, weaving together Robinsonade adventure, social satire about American commerce, and a tender meditation on what it actually means to be educated in the ways of the world. The novel asks: when the structures of society fall away, what skills truly matter?
