Fraternity
1909
In Edwardian London, a wealthy woman named Cecilia Dallison stands in an elegant shop in Kensington, hesitating over a new dress, while just beyond her circle of comfort, a seamstress named Mrs. Hughs struggles against a brutal husband and the crushing weight of poverty. What begins as a day in the life of the privileged becomes an unsettling reckoning in this sharp, compassionate novel about what it costs to look away from suffering when you have the means to see it. Galsworthy traces Cecilia's gradual awakening to the lives of those less fortunate, her husband, her daughter, her circle of friends all orbit their own concerns, but Cecilia cannot quite return to the easy indifference that once defined her. Part social satire, part moral inquiry, Fraternity examines the bohemian art world and the middle-class complacency that surrounds it, asking whether compassion is truly possible across the chasm of class, or whether it remains always a kind of performance. Published in 1909, this is Galsworthy at his most incisive, capturing a society on the verge of transformation.
