Fables
1896
Robert Louis Stevenson proved he could spin a moral with the same mischievous wit he brought to Jekyll and Hyde. Published the year after his death, these fables are deceptively simple: talking animals, paradoxical encounters, and dialogues that seem to veer toward Aesop before swerving into something stranger. 'The Sick Man and the Fireman' and 'The Devil and the Innkeeper' find Stevenson at his most playful, extracting humor from selfishness and duty while never quite letting his readers off the hook. The tone oscillates between nursery rhyme and dark comedy, with Stevenson using satire less to expose vice than to expose the absurdity of virtue itself. These aren't children's stories dressed in animal costumes. They're philosophical puzzles wrapped in entertainments, each one ending with a moral that feels less like instruction and more like a trapdoor into doubt. For readers who appreciate Stevenson the ironist rather than Stevenson the adventure novelist, this collection offers a window into a less celebrated but equally distinctive gift.
