Ebenezer Scrooge is a man who has calcified into cruelty. He counts coins instead of friends, views the poor as nuisance, and treats every act of kindness as weakness. On Christmas Eve, the ghost of his dead partner Jacob Marley materializes, wrapped in chains he forged through a lifetime of selfishness. Marley warns Scrooge: three spirits will come, and if he doesn't change, he'll share Marley's fate. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge what he sacrificed, love, opportunity, his own humanity. The Ghost of Christmas Present reveals the poverty and struggle existing alongside his wealth. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows him a grave with no mourners. One night. Three spectral visits. The possibility of redemption, if Scrooge chooses it. Dickens wrote this novella in 1843 as a punch against England's brutal indifference to the poor. It landed like a bomb. Two centuries later, it still detonates.
