Dickens wrote this in 1843 as a furious indictment of Victorian England's brutal inequality, and somehow transformed it into the most beloved ghost story ever told. Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly accountant who views Christmas as "humbug," is visited in a single night by the specter of his dead partner and three spirits who drag him through his own forgotten past, his bleak present, and a terrifying possible future. What unfolds is a descent into memory and a confrontation with the life he's built one coin at a time. The miracle is how Dickens makes Scrooge's transformation feel not just possible but inevitable and earned. This is a book about whether it's ever too late to become someone better.
