Antiquary
In this richly textured 1816 novel, a young man named Lovel finds himself trapped between his own uncertain origins and the rigid social hierarchies of revolutionary-era Scotland. Born to unknown parentage, he carries the weight of illegitimacy like a secret shame, yet his acts of courage and integrity slowly begin to reshape his destiny. His journey toward respectability and love becomes intertwined with that of the title's antiquary, Jonathan Oldbuck, a learned but world-weary scholar who recognizes in Lovel a tragic echo of his own disappointed youth. Oldbuck's passion for the past and his tendency to lecture his reluctant companion provide moments of sharp comedy even as the novel explores deeper questions of identity, inheritance, and what we owe to those who came before us. The novel builds toward a revelation that will determine whether Lovel can claim the birth and fortunes of a nobleman, or whether the past will remain forever just out of reach.
