A History of Nineteenth Century Literature (1780-1895)

George Saintsbury wrote this history as a Victorian critic surveying the literary century he had just lived through, and that immediacy is precisely what makes it invaluable. Rather than a detached academic overview, this is a contemporary witness's passionate account of how English literature transformed from the twilight of Augustan poetry through the Romantic revolution and into the teeming Victorian novel. Saintsbury traces the century's major currents while pausing to champion particular figures, Cowper's quiet revolutionary spirit, Blake's prophetic strangeness, Burns's democratization of verse, with the conviction of a man who read these authors as they were being written. The book captures something no later history can: the living sense of literary tradition as it was being made, not as it was later catalogued. For readers interested in how the Victorians understood themselves, how periods get named and boundaries drawn, this remains essential reading.
