A Child's Dream of a Star
1850
Dickens turned from his usual satirical genius to something quieter and more fragile: a story about two children who find wonder in a single star and lose everything to the cruelty of time. The boy and his sister lie in the grass night after night, dreaming of the beautiful light that might carry them beyond this world. Then illness takes her, and he is left alone with a grief no child should bear. But the star returns to him in dreams, again and again, a flickering promise that death is not an ending. Through a lifetime of further losses, his mother and his own daughter, he follows that pale light, until finally the dream becomes a doorway and he walks through to meet them all. This is Dickens unmasked: not the social satirist, not the master of Victorian chaos, but a father and a mourner reaching for something he cannot prove but cannot stop believing in. It has comforted readers for over a century not because it explains death, but because it refuses to let grief have the last word.
