Sara Yorke Stevenson was a pioneering American archaeologist and a prominent advocate for women's rights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1847, she became a leading figure in Egyptology, contributing significantly to the field through her scholarly publications on ancient cultures and material artifacts. As one of the founders of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, she served as the first curator of its Egyptian Collection, playing a crucial role in acquiring and organizing many of its treasures. Stevenson's expertise was widely recognized, and she became the first woman to lecture at the Peabody Museum at Harvard University, as well as the first female member of the Jury of Awards for Ethnology at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In addition to her archaeological work, Stevenson was a dedicated suffragist and women's rights activist. She served as the first president of both the Equal Franchise Society and the Civic Club of Philadelphia, advocating for women's suffrage and social reform. Her influence extended beyond academia and activism; she also wrote a memoir about the reign of Maximilian I of Mexico and contributed columns to the Philadelphia Public Ledger. Stevenson's legacy is marked by her groundbreaking achievements in a male-dominated field and her commitment to advancing women's rights, making her a significant figure in both archaeology and social reform.
