Royall Tyler was an influential American jurist, teacher, and playwright, best known for his contributions to early American theater. Born in Boston, he graduated from Harvard University in 1776 and served in the Massachusetts militia during the American Revolution. After being admitted to the bar in 1780, Tyler established a successful legal career while also raising eleven children. His legal acumen led to his appointment as a Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court in 1801, marking a significant milestone in his professional life. Tyler's literary legacy is anchored by his groundbreaking play, The Contrast, which premiered in New York City in 1787. This work is recognized as the first American comedy, reflecting the social dynamics and cultural aspirations of the young nation. The play garnered attention not only for its humor but also for its critique of American society, and it was notably attended by George Washington, further elevating Tyler's status as a literary figure. Through his work, Tyler helped to shape the landscape of American theater, paving the way for future playwrights and contributing to the development of a distinctly American voice in literature.
“The Jetavana Temple bells ring the passing of all things. Twinned sala trees, white in full flower, declare the great man's certain fall. The arrogant do not long endure: They are like a dream one night in spring. The bold and brave perish in the end: They are as dust before the wind.”
“So it is that in our world hopes are thwarted at every turn and the people's lot is always pain.”
